Do you have goals that you want to pursue in your own work and career?

I am old now so I do not know how far I can go. I treat my shop as a part of my semi-retired life. I will not give myself too much pressure. I am still addicted to trying new knots invented by others. Now I mostly apply Chinese knots on accessories because they are easy to be carried along and shown to others. On the contrary, the large-sized knots are popular souvenirs bought by local customers to give to foreigners. Local people normally do not have much space in their homes and not as likely to have Chinese decorative styles as some Westerners may have. People hence seldom put the large knots in homes.

In your opinion, is integrating other elements such as Western knots an essential way to promote Chinese knots?

I think there is no relation between adding new elements and promotion of the craft. It is only my own interest and creativity that leads me to add on new features.

However, promotion relies on the influence of the media such as the radio and TV. I have learned so much about knots and I have a responsibility towards the continuity of the art. Therefore I greatly welcome the media’s interviews as I should pass my knowledge on and and let more people become acquainted with Chinese knots .

About Cheung Bo Yin:
“I was obsessed with knots when I started learning it. But I learned Western knots first. No one taught Chinese knots in Hong Kong at the time. However, my teacher's daughter brought the skill of making Chinese knots to Hong Kong from Taiwan. Then my teacher opened a Chinese knots class. I was one of her first students, and the only student who still delves deeply into knots today”
